Kiteboarding

Kiteboarding is an innovative sport that allows for impressive stunts. A groundbreaking invention by the brothers Bruno Legaignoux and Dominique Legaignoux in 1984 was a major development for the sport. They created the first kite with an inflatable frame.

The “leading edge inflatable kite” (LEI) made the kite stable in shape and relaunchable from the water. Due to the high jumps and wide wind range, it quickly became a visually striking sport. Its popularity grew rapidly.

Today, the sport can be divided into a wide range of disciplines: big air (originating from traditional “old school” kitesurfing), wave riding (using a surfboard or directional board), wakestyle (characterized by wakeboard-style tricks), racing (focused on speed or course racing), and foiling (using a hydrofoil).

Most of these disciplines can also be practiced in a strapless variation (riding a board without bindings). Freestyle and freeride are commonly used terms that generally describe a mix of big air and wakestyle, or other combinations, where freestyle is often considered the more extreme variation.

Equipment

Kiteboarding equipment  consists of several components. The main elements are the kite, the board, and the bar. In addition, you will at least need a harness, and optionally a wetsuit (which is generally recommended, as windy conditions often mean cooler temperatures). Below, we cover the different components that make up kiteboarding equipment.

If you are planning to purchase kitesurfing gear, you may find yourself in quite a jungle of options. Over the years, the sport has evolved rapidly. Kites, bars, and boards have undergone significant improvements at various stages—both in terms of user-friendliness and safety, as well as quality.

Due to the growth of the market, brands have become increasingly innovative—not only in usability and the use of high-quality materials, but also in the technical development of components down to the smallest details. As kiteboarding equipment has become so diverse, we aim to provide a basic overview of what you can expect.

At its core, kiteboarding is a combination of wakeboarding (using a twin-tip kiteboard) and flying a kite. In most cases, the kite is an LEI (leading edge inflatable), which is controlled with a bar. Later, the use of surfboards and hydrofoils was introduced.

LEI kites can be divided into several types. The greatest diversity is found in SLE kites (supported leading edge kites). The inflatable front tube of these kites—the leading edge—is supported by a bridle system. This bridle is a network of lines connected to the power lines (front lines). This setup gives these kites a wide wind range.

Within this category, you will find types such as C-kites, bow kites, and delta-shaped kites. Another type of kite is the ram-air kite, which does not have an inflatable frame and is similar in design to a paraglider or parachute.

Kites

There are quite a few misconceptions about the different types of kites and their terminology. Their characteristics are also often confused. This is mainly due to the rapid development of the sport and its strong commercialization. In a short period of time, many new brands emerged, and even established brands often used popular marketing terms to give their models catchy descriptions.

For example, the traditional C-kite was at one point promoted as the ultimate “cool” kite for achieving big jumps. Bow and delta kites were developed to create a larger wind range, which initially made them attractive for beginners. Later, it turned out that these kites also allowed for much higher jumps. Today, they perform very well in the big air discipline.

However, unhooked tricks are much more difficult with these types of kites. So if you manage to land an unhooked trick on a bow or delta kite, you definitely earn some extra respect 😉

A number of basic skills and safety insights are essential to successfully get through the beginner phase. Therefore, kitesurfing lessons are crucial for anyone starting out.
